UEM Edgenta - Premix Plant

New facility marks a significant milestone in circular economy infrastructure with recycled asphalt capabilities and reduced carbon footprint

TAPAH, PERAK, July 30 (Bernama) -- UEM Edgenta Berhad (“UEM Edgenta” or “the Company”), a leading Asset Management and Infrastructure Solutions company, today announced the development and operational readiness of its first Premix Plant with Recycling Facility located in Chenderiang, Tapah, Perak to produce Recycled Asphalt Premix (RAP). Developed through its infrastructure services subsidiary Edgenta PROPEL Berhad, the plant represents a strategic step forward in the company’s mission to lead sustainable infrastructure solutions aligned with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Operational since September 2024, UEM Edgenta’s Premix Plant represents a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure development. The plant is built with a production capacity of 240 tonnes per hour, allowing it to handle large-scale asphalt production efficiently. It is also equipped with advanced technology that enables it to produce asphalt mixtures containing recycled materials, supporting more sustainable and environmentally friendly construction practices.

The introduction of the Premix Plant reflects UEM Edgenta’s strong commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles by reducing reliance on virgin raw materials and enabling circular economy practices in road maintenance. The facility is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by up to 15 percent compared to traditional asphalt production methods. It also supports more than 200 kilometres of pavement rehabilitation annually. The energy-efficient process consumes less power per tonne due to the reuse of recycled materials.

“The Premix Plant reflects our commitment to delivering sustainable, high-performance infrastructure solutions that benefit not only our clients but the nation as a whole. By incorporating recycled materials and energy-efficient processes, we’re helping our clients reduce their environmental footprint while promoting long-term sustainability as well as significantly reduces environmental impact through material circularity,” said Raihana Ahmad, Head, Infrastructure Services.

In alignment with Khazanah Nasional’s sustainability agenda and Malaysia’s 2050 renewable energy goals, the plant serves as a model for resource-efficient engineering. It supports the NETR by promoting recycled materials, reducing landfill waste and advancing environmentally responsible infrastructure development.

Strategically located near the PLUS Highway, the Premix Plant offers significant logistical advantages, enabling efficient distribution of our RAP products to key infrastructure and road rehabilitation projects across Perak and the central region. This strategic positioning not only enhances operational responsiveness but also reduces transportation time and associated emissions, aligning with UEM Edgenta’s commitment to operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The plant is operated by a directly-hired workforce made up primarily of local talent, including skilled technicians and plant operators. More than just a production facility, it reflects UEM Edgenta’s commitment to integrating sustainability with socio-economic development. This reduces environmental impact through recycled materials while creating meaningful employment and upskilling opportunities. The balanced approach not only supports national infrastructure goals, but also strengthens community resilience and long-term value creation.

Guided by global technological advancements and the evolving needs of Malaysia’s infrastructure landscape, our Premix Plant with recycling facility and Pavement Research Center (PRC) have taken significant steps forward in innovating sustainable premix products for broader industry adoption and future regional expansion.

This initiative reinforces UEM Edgenta’s role as a forward-looking infrastructure partner to the government and private sector in shaping a more resilient and low-carbon future.
