KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) -- Closing off the events of the first day of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Related Meetings, Malaysia hosted a Trilateral Meeting with Norway and the ASEAN Secretariat on 8 July 2025, from 5:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Mohamad bin Alamin and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Andreas Kravik.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Foreign Minister welcomed the opportunity to convene with Norway and the ASEAN Secretariat, and acknowledged Norway’s meaningful partnership with ASEAN since becoming a Sectoral Dialogue Partner in 2015.

The meeting provided a timely platform to reflect on Norway’s growing contributions to ASEAN’s community-building efforts. The Deputy Foreign Minister commended Norway’s engagement in peacebuilding and dialogue initiatives, particularly its support for the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR), and welcomed continued collaboration in regional mediation and preventive diplomacy.

The discussion also covered shared priorities in sustainability, climate action, and environmental cooperation, with particular appreciation for Norway’s support through initiatives such as the ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT) and ASEANO. Malaysia welcomed Norway’s interest in deepening engagement on digital innovation, circular economy, marine biodiversity, and the green energy transition.

Looking ahead, the Deputy Foreign Minister encouraged closer cooperation in education, youth development, gender empowerment, and responsible business practices. He reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to finalising and implementing the ASEAN–Norway Practical Cooperation Areas (2026–2030), and emphasised the importance of continued coordination with the ASEAN Secretariat to ensure meaningful and effective outcomes.

The meeting underscored ASEAN’s role as a trusted convener of diverse partners and its commitment to fostering constructive, forward-looking cooperation in an increasingly complex global landscape.
