BANGI, May 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), successfully hosted the “Kutip Sampah Sambil Riadah” (KUDAH) and “Don’t Be a Litterbug” programme today at Alur Ilmu, Friends of Langat River, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Bringing together government officials, students, and industry representatives, the event promoted public awareness on the critical importance of not littering to reduce waste pollution in Malaysia. Activities included a riverbank clean-up, waste separation efforts, and demonstration of plastic recycling process via “The Green Truck”.
Through this event, MPMA wishes to emphasise that littering—not plastic itself—is one of the main contributors to pollution in waterways and urban areas. Irresponsible disposal of any type of waste leads to environmental consequences and combating littering behaviour through education and community involvement is key. This is why MPMA initiated the “Don’t Be a Litterbug” programme in 2015 aimed at combating littering and promoting responsible waste disposal. Often held at large public events such as Thaipusam, marathons and Ramadan bazaars, MPMA is actively looking for more like-minded partners to collectively drive public education on proper waste separation and disposal.
The event also served as a platform to highlight the growing partnership between MPMA and NRES. Through collaborative efforts, including policy updates and sustainability-focused initiatives, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to promoting responsible consumption and waste management.
NRES expressed that this partnership with MPMA exemplifies how public-private cooperation can accelerate Malaysia’s sustainability goals. NRES and MPMA have been working together since the development of the Malaysia Plastics Sustainability Roadmap 2021-2030 and currently on the on-going Global Plastics Treaty negotiation to balance and synergise Government and industry’s expectations and commitments for the betterment of Malaysia’s environment. In addition to policy development, working together on outreach initiatives such as today’s event can enhance public awareness, improve waste infrastructure, and support circular economy principles.
MPMA will continue to engage stakeholders nationwide through similar outreach programmes to strengthen environmental stewardship and encourage a shared responsibility in keeping Malaysia clean and sustainable.
