Penang's restored urban resort brings together heritage-led hospitality, contemporary comfort and local discovery

PENANG, July 23 (Bernama) -- 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang today celebrated its grand launch as a restored urban resort in the city, bringing a property first built in 1926 into a new era of heritage-led hospitality under The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited.

The official launch marks a new chapter for one of Penang’s distinctive heritage properties at a time when the island continues to build momentum as a leading destination for culture, lifestyle and experience-led travel. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, domestic tourism recorded 290.1 million visitors in 2025, an increase of 11.5% from 260.1 million in 2024. This positive momentum continued into the first quarter of 2026, with 74.7 million domestic visitors recorded, representing a 7.2% increase compared with the same period in the previous year.

As Penang welcomes stronger visitor demand, thoughtfully restored properties such as 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang are adding new depth to the island’s hospitality offering. The hotel introduces a fresh urban resort experience to Penang’s accommodation landscape while preserving the character, sense of place and individuality that continue to set the destination apart.

The grand launch was officiated by YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang in the presence of Dato’ Ir. Rajendran P. Anthony, Mayor of Penang, Dato' Frank Koay, the owner of 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang, Mr. Mondi Mecja, Country General Manager, Ascott Malaysia and invited guests representing Penang’s tourism, hospitality, business, creative and lifestyle industries.

Located along Jalan Burma, the hotel’s 78 rooms and suites set across 24 interconnected heritage link houses breathe new life into a landmark originally built in 1926 as residences for British officials. The property has been thoughtfully transformed into an urban sanctuary that conserves its distinctive Anglo-Malay architectural influences while allowing guests a quieter way to explore, observe and participate in Penang’s colourful landscape.

As part of The Unlimited Collection by The Ascott Limited, 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang further strengthens Ascott’s portfolio in Malaysia. The collection brings together distinctive, independent hotels that celebrate authentic places through thoughtfully curated experiences and design-led stays. The addition of 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang also reflects Ascott’s long-term confidence in Malaysia as it continues to expand its global presence.

In officiating the launch, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow said: "Penang continues to strengthen its position as one of the region's leading tourism destinations by embracing developments that highlight our rich identity while meeting the expectations of today's travellers.

“The restoration of 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang shows how meaningful adaptive reuse can preserve architectural character and enhance the long-term vibrancy of our tourism economy. Projects like these add depth and distinction to the island while creating new advantages for businesses and communities."

Mr. Mondi Mecja, Country General Manager, Ascott Malaysia, said: “Malaysia remains one of Ascott’s strategic growth markets, and Penang continues to stand out with its culture, heritage, creativity and international appeal. As travellers increasingly seek stays that connect them more meaningfully to a destination, The Unlimited Collection brings together hotels that celebrate local character, thoughtful design and authentic experiences.

“Together with our partners, we are proud to introduce 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang as a property that captures the spirit of Penang while reflecting Ascott’s commitment to delivering meaningful experiences around the world."

As part of its lifestyle offering, 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang features the Sensorium Wellness spa, dining venues the Root House by Gēn, The Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee and U-Bar, artisanal product space U-Shop and curated artworks by Penang-born artist Koay Shao Peng. Together, these reveal the hotel's commitment to showcase home-grown creativity while providing guests with opportunities to interact more closely with their surroundings.

Guests are also encouraged to take in Jalan Burma and its immediate neighbourhoods, where George Town’s tapestry of colours, sights and sounds unfold through eateries, arts spaces, places of worship and markets. The hotel serves as an ideal base for travellers seeking an authentic stay within easy reach of the city's many charms.

With its official launch, 1926 Heritage Hotel Penang begins a new chapter as a modern retreat and a testament to thoughtful restoration, contemporary comforts and enduring hospitality, inviting travellers to immerse themselves in Penang’s architecture, culture, dining, wellness, art and local stories.
